I'm not trying to say here that the 5L bottle of wine is a Portuguese symbol per se, it has more to do with nostalgia and childhood memories, and most my fellow countrymen will agree with me.
You see, both my grandparents produced wine. When I was a child, our summer vacations would always include a trip upnorth to my grandparents home. The journey back south would always be marked by the car boot completely packed with these demijohn bottles.
There's not much symbolism to the bottle itself, but when it comes to wine... Life, strengh and transformation are the ideals more connoted with this nobal substance, along with the values of freindship and love.
