My favourite bird...
The Raven is one of the most important symbols of Lisbon. (Fun fact: you won't really see many (or any) ravens when visiting the city.) But there is a legend behind this mysterious bird: Saint Vincent of Saragossa was a martyr who was killed during the Roman Empire. After his death, his body was protected by ravens, and, when he was buried, a shrine was erected over his grave, which continued to be guarded by flocks of ravens. In the XII century, the remains of the saint were exhumed and brought by ship to Lisbon by King Afonso Henriques, still accompanied by these loyal, magical birds.
The raven is, by many, regarded as a divine messenger between this world and the other, or a foreteller of the future.
I like to think of the Raven as a bearer of magical forces, powerful wisdom and high, positive energies. An extremely powerful and mystical symbol.
